My First Fondant Cake!
Breakfast at Tiffany' Cake
Today's post is a really special one for me because working with fondant was a huge accomplishment for me baking-wise. A friend of a friend called me recently and asked me if I was up for making her a cake for her 20th birthday party, which was going to be a black-tie formal Breakfast at Tiffany's theme bash. It sounded like such a fun job that I immediately told her yes I could make the cake, and was so excited until she said she really wanted it to be all fondant covered, with a fondant Tiffany bag and box on top of the cake. The fondant part is what made me so nervous, because I had never really worked with fondant before, but I had to try it at some point!
So Natty, the birthday girl, wanted an 8-inch 3 layer chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream in between each of the cake layers. She wanted the layer cake then covered in quilted black fondant, then lined with white "pearls", also made out of fondant, and white beads between each of the lines on the quilted cake body. On top she wanted a Tiffany blue gift bag that said "Breakfast at Natty's" and a small gift box in the same color with a cute bow on top.
After so much research about fondant decorating, scouring the internet for a really amazing chocolate cake recipe, and tons of Youtube videos, it was time to make the cake! I baked the 3 chocolate cake layers 2 days before the party, and did all the fondant work the day before the party. It was a lot of work and I definitely had a few freak-out moments, but I was really happy in the end with how it turned out and I'm looking forward to using more fondant to be able to practice it more and more!!
